My eldest (she's 5 years old) had her sports day this week.

but...there were no sports. No races, jumping, hopping, skipping, running, or general competitiveness.

The "sports" consisted of completely pointless goal-free acitivities. For example: pass the bean bag up and down the line for 10 minutes.

 Um...what was that?

Or the "chase out and turn things over and run back - next child turns them back".

Pleasse tell me that this isn;t typcial of sports days all over the country now?

When I was at School sports day was a total waste of time.  Whether it be Primary School or Secondary .. it was rubbish.

PE in general at Schools these days, and while I was at High School was a chore, simply because we did so little of it and couldn’t do what we wanted. I.e. everyone had to do everything, rather than providing facilities for certain sports you enjoyed / were better at.

I was quite into Tennis and Rugby, but we could only play either during PE for about 2 months of the School year for 80 mins a week. Rest of the time we're doing something else .. some mandatory cross country run, or long jump ..

I can't say I was much of a fan of sports day myself at school - but my eldest daughter is the sporty type and she needs challenging. Smiley

In the school where I taught before, Sportsfest is the day we call dedicated to sports.  However, it was only good for Grs. 4 to secondary education as the pre=schoolers until grade 3 usually have sort of party games and puppet shows.

we had great sports in PE during high school--but i think the variety wasn't enough.  the amount of time alloted for PE wasn't enough, too...i did enjoy the teaching of dances and sports...but i hope we had more PE...i think we only had it like twice a week...
